Packaging & Materials

Good sausages deserve good packaging.

At S for Sausage, we put just as much care into how your food is packed as how it’s made. You’ll notice this the moment your order arrives. Every material is chosen with the intention to protect quality and reduce unnecessary waste where it makes sense

Good sausages.

Thoughtful packaging.

Made with intention, right down to the details.

Our sausages are sealed in home-compostable vacuum pouches — a progressive choice in meat packaging, and one we’re genuinely proud of.

When composted under the right conditions, these pouches are designed to break down within around 3–6 months, returning fully back to the earth as water (H₂O), carbon dioxide (CO₂), and natural nutrients.

No plastic residue. No microplastics. Just materials going back to soil.

We chose this packaging because it protects food properly and offers a much gentler end-of-life than conventional plastic. It’s a small detail that makes a meaningful difference.

You’ll see recognised compostability verification logos on our packaging and website, so you know this isn’t just a claim, it’s been tested and certified.

A gentle note on composting

Composting works best when conditions are right.

If you have a well-maintained home compost, these pouches can break down naturally over time. If home composting isn’t available to you, commercial composting may be an option depending on your area.

Either way, choosing our products helps move food packaging away from permanent waste and closer to circular systems.

For frozen delivery, we use natural wool insulation alongside cooling gel packs to help moderate temperatures during transit.

The wool insulation is made from sheep wool fibres that would otherwise go to waste, fibres that are unsuitable for clothing textiles, but incredibly effective as natural insulation.

Wool works beautifully for cold-chain delivery because it:

  • Traps air naturally, helping slow temperature change
  • Manages moisture well, supporting a more stable environment
  • Adds gentle cushioning, so your sausages arrive protected and tidy

Depending on supply, the wool may include fibres sourced from both New Zealand and Australian sheep. It’s a smart, lower-impact alternative to polystyrene and single-use foam and one we’re proud to use.

Reusing your wool insulation

Our wool insulation doesn’t have to be single-use.

Many customers choose to reuse it around the home or garden - it works beautifully as frost protection in flower beds, lining planter boxes or helping regulate moisture around plants. Others keep it for future chilled or frozen deliveries, road trips, picnics or chilly bins on the go.

Some people even save up packs to use as extra insulation for sheds, garages or small DIY projects or get creative with craft and home uses. However you choose to reuse it, wool is a naturally hardworking material that’s happy to be given a second (or third) life.

We also include premium cooling gel packs in every frozen order.

These packs act like liquid ice, once frozen, they slowly absorb heat as they warm, helping keep temperatures lower for longer during delivery. Unlike ice, they don’t melt into water, which helps keep your box dry and tidy in transit.

Gel packs work hand-in-hand with our wool insulation to add an extra layer of temperature buffering, especially when parcels experience longer delivery times.

Many customers choose to refreeze and reuse them at home, for future deliveries, road trips or chilly bins on the go.

Your order arrives in our signature yellow box which is 100% recyclable, designed to keep everything protected, easy to unpack, and instantly recognisable at your door.

We keep the system simple: a strong outer box, insulated inner layers and clear packing, so you can get your sausages into the fridge or freezer quickly and easily.

We believe better everyday food shouldn’t come with unnecessary waste or thoughtless packaging.

Our approach isn’t about perfection or preaching, it’s about making careful, considered choices where they matter most, without compromising food safety or quality.

As we grow, we’ll continue reviewing and improving our materials to balance performance, responsibility, and practicality.
